Pumpkin Book

You can make this project with a face for a Halloween Jack-o-Lantern or without a face for a nutrition or Thanksgiving theme.

Thanks so much to Bethany for sharing this great idea for a pumpkin craft.  If your little ones are a too young to help with carving a real pumpkin then here is a great Alternative to keep them involved.

Savannah shared these photos of the finished craft by on of the children in her childcare program:  "...  There were a few variations on that particular pumpkin, it was an older child's and he opted to use brown construction paper instead of green, and he didn't want a curly Q, Also, instead of yellow yarn we used orange, obviously, and we also did a three hole punch book tied with orange yarn instead of staples."

Materials:

• Construction paper
  • Orange.
  • Green
  • Yellow.
• Dried pumpkin seeds (from your real jack-o-lantern).
• Yellow yarn

Instructions:

• Cut two large pumpkins from orange construction paper and staple together on the left side (like a book).
• Cut out a green stem and curly Q.
• Cut out yellow eyes, nose and mouth for a jack o lantern face.
• The first day activity is to clean out a pumpkin with the children.  They pull out the seeds and let them dry. We also read pumpkin stories etc.
• The next day I had carved the jack-o lantern (my children were too young to help with that but older children could help).
• We then took out paper pumpkins and on the inside pumpkin we glued the dried pumpkin seeds and orange yarn to show the inside of the pumpkin.
• Next step is make the "front" pumpkin a jack o lantern.  The children can glue on the face pieces and stem.

The children love this one!  (my children were ages 1-3)
