Snowman Paper Craft
Now that we've practiced our shapes a bit with the single shape crafts (like the Circle Bear and Triangle Fish), lets mix them up a bit with the shape snowman. Make sure you use the name of each shape to help your young ones learn which is which. As you are working on the craft you might ask your child to look around the room and point out other shapes (I usually make sure there's a few sitting around to facilitate the exercise.)
Materials:
- printer,
- paper,
- scissors,
- glue,
- something to colour with
Instructions:
- Print out the template and cut out the pieces.
- Colour pieces as appropriate.
- Sort the circles into big, medium, and small. (still great practice!) Glue the circles together to form a snowman.
- Next find the squares and rectangles. Point out how the square has 4 equal sides and the rectangles have two sets of two equal sides. Glue the black square to the black rectangle to form a hat. Paste it on the snowman's head. Glue the long rectangles on as arms.
- Pick out the three diamonds (count them!). Point out how they look like squished squares (like an elephant sat on them!) Glue them on as buttons.
- Glue the triangle on as a nose and the star on as a hat decoration.
Alternative Decorating Ideas:
- Print the template on heavy construction paper or card stock. Then glue a popsicle stick or tongue depressor on to make a puppet (if you don't have either, you can always tape a pencil on).
- Depending on the age of the child they may have already mastered the names of the shapes. If this is so, you can work on shape characteristics... like counting the sides of each shape. My oldest daughter likes to do this when she's helping with these types of crafts.
