National Gingerbread Day is celebrated on June 5th each year! This may seem a bit odd because gingerbread is typically thought of as a holiday dessert, but actually gingerbread is a popular flavour and has historically been eaten year round! Gingerbread refers to the flavour when a recipe includes ginger and is sweetened with honey, molasses, treacle. There are many different types of gingerbread recipes— everything from soft and hard cookies to loaves to muffins!
Gingerbread dates back a long time! In fact, evidence suggests that gingerbread dates back thousands of years ago (Before The Common Era) to recipes created in Greece and China. It wasn't until aout the 11th century that gingerbread was brought to Europe, but it became very popular once it arrived. In fact lots of festivals served gingerbread treats as a special festival snack. Pharmacies also sold gingerbread goods as a remedy for upset stomachs and nausea due to the digestive properties of ginger. (I know that I would have loved to get to eat a gingerbread cookie everytime I had an upset stomach!) Nowadays gingerbread looks quite a bit different and there are countless recipes for gingerbread treats to try!
Below are some fun gingerbread activities and recipes to help you celebrate this delicious holiday!
