Edward Rowland Sill was a poet, essayist, and educator from the United States. He was born in 1841 in Conneticut and graduated from Yale when he was 20. After graduating he planned to do business in California, but ended up moving back to the East with plans to engage in politics. He ended up giving up on those political plans and started working as an educator in a variety of places and positions. He was a principal of a highschool and an English literature professor at the University of California. For several years, Edward R Sill focused on his literary work (specifically poetry and essays). In the winter of 1887, Edward passed away in Cleveland, Ohio.
Edward Rowland Sill did not publish very many poems or essays, especially compared to some of the larger and more influential poets. His early death at only 45 years old likely contributed to the smaller influence he had on American poetry. However, the work he did publish was great quality—very thoughtful and strong literary pieces. He published most of his work in The Atlantic Monthly and some of his more famous poems include The Venus of Milo, The Fool's Prayer, and Opportunity.
Below are a few of Sill's poems, which poem is your favourite. There are also some craft and activity suggestions so that children can read the poems and have fun crafting as they learn about the amazing poet, Edward R Sill.
