William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland on June 13, 1865. His father was an Irish Painter and he studied painting as a child but decided that he preferred poetry instead. A lot of his poems involved figure from Irish folklore because Yeats wanted to promote and preserve Ireland's culture and heritage. In fact, Yeats was a very influential Irish cultural figure and eventually became a senator of the Irish Free State in 1922.
Yeats was in love with a Irish revolutionary and actress named Maud Gonne. She performed in some of the plays that he wrote for the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He proposed to her several times, yet she always refused his proposal. Nonethless, Yeats continued to write many poems inspired by Maud even after she married another man.
