World UFO Day - July 2nd

World UFO Day is celebrated annually on July 2nd and is a chance for everyone to explore the possibility of extraterrestrial life by searching the skies, discussing the subject with friends, and even doing some research or attending events. UFO stands for "unidentified flying object", a term coined by the United States Military. The topic of UFOs and aliens is very popular, which is clear given the sheer number of movies and pop culture on the topic.
The holiday was originally celebrated on June 24th, which marks the anniversary of the day that Kenneth Arnold (who was an American aviator) claimed to spot a UFO flying over Washington in 1947. Only days afterwards, the Rosswell incident occured. On July 2nd, 1947 a group of US citizens saw something crash from the sky and on inspecting the wreackage it appeared to be a strange structure made out of interesting materials. The US government quickly cleaned up the crash and explained that it was a weather balloon. However, many conspiracy theorists started developing theories that the crash was actually a UFO and that the US government was covering up the incident. Since many people were celebrating UFO Day on seperate days, the holiday was officially declared on July 2nd instead.
While those two big incidents in the middle of the 20th century really kickstarted the worlds' fascination with UFOs and aliens, there are still many people who report seeing UFOs. Common reports include descriptions of a saucer-shaped object, bright and mysterious lights, etc. The fact the UFOs and all of these reports are so mysterious, only adds to the excitement of celebrating World UFO Day. It really is a great chance to have an open mind and consider what might be out there!
Below are several space and alien activities that are a great way to celebrate this awesome SPACE-iversary!
