Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in a one-bedroom log cabin in Kentucky, USA. He was from a modest working class family and didn't get much education as a child because he was busy working. Nonethless, he was able to read and write and with that he learned as much as he could. In fact, he taught himself law and passed the bar exam to become a lawyer in Illinois. Lincoln met his wife Mary Todd in Illinois and they had four children together.
His political career started in local politics and spent several terms serving in state legistlature in Illinois. It wasn't until 1946 that he won his election into the U.S. House of Representatives and became a congressman. When he was 51 years old he was elected the 16th president of the United States; he served his first term from 1860 to 1864 and was re-elected for a second term in 1864.
During his presidency, Abraham Lincoln led the country during the American Civil War. The Lincoln Memorial (pictured on the right) memorializes his large role in preserving the Union. on January 1st, 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared forever free the slaves within the Confederacy. He also gave the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, which is one of the most famous speeches in America history.
On Good Friday (April 14th) 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor. Just hours before his assassination, Lincoln signed the bill to create the U.S. Secret Service (although it's original purpose was not to protect the president).
