George Washington was born on February 22nd, 1732 in Virginia, USA and was the eldest of six children. There is a famous story that when George Washington was just a little boy he chopped down his father's prize cherry tree and then confessed to the crime. To be honest, George Washington's childhood was a very long time ago, so it can't be certain if this story is true.
George Washington's first job was as a surveyor but when he was 20 years old he became commander of the Virginia militia. After seven years of service he served in the Colony of Virginia legislative body—the House of Burgesses. During that time he also met and married his wife Martha.
One of the biggest endeavors in George Washington's life was as commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, where the American colonies fought to gain independence from the British. While Washington was not the best military strategist, he was an excellent leader and was able to inspire the army to keep fighting.
After the American Revolution, George Washington actually returned to his home in Virginia but he was asked to attend the Consistutional Convention and lead the way as the committee formed the new constituion. His leadership was impressive and he was urged to become the first president. In the first presidential election (1789), George Washington won and the first runner up, John Adams, became the vice president.
George Washington served as president for 8 years (from 1789 to 1796). When he was president, America looked a lot different and was only made up of 11 states. Since George Washington was the first president of the United States, he did a lot of new things for the country including:
- Nominating the first chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
- Setting up the Bank of the United States.
- Declaring November 26th a national holiday—Thanksgiving.
- Establishing the future U.S. capital along the Potomac River, which was later named after him (Washington, D.C.).
